"We're incredibly proud of (chef) Kelly McCown and the team at The Kitchen for this well-deserved recognition," Visit Sacramento President and CEO Mike Testa said in a statement. "This is a pivotal moment for Sacramento's culinary community and for our future as a food destination. Our region's restaurants are truly some of the best in the Golden State, and now with Michelin's endorsement, we're excited to see what's next in the evolution of Sacramento as America's Farm-to-Fork Capital."

The Kitchen Restaurant was founded in 1991 by husband-and-wife team of Chef Randall Selland and Chef Nancy Zimmer, along with their grown children Josh Nelson and Tamera Baker. It's known for its Farm-to-Fork philosophy and seasonal menu.

In April, the restaurant was named one of USA Today's 30 Best Restaurants in America.

The Kitchen was one of 27 restaurants across the state that were awarded a Michelin star for the first time, 18 of which were in Los Angeles. Altogether, 69 restaurants from the Golden State have a Michelin star.

The announcement comes as Michelin produced its first-ever California guide. Michelin publishes 32 guides annually in more than two dozen countries, including four guides in the United States.

The California guide is the first statewide or regional guide in the United States.

The guide also includes 10 other Sacramento restaurants that were given the Michelin Plates designation. While the designation isn't as prestigious as the Bid Gourmand or star status, the restaurants were "judged using the same criteria and are designated for having very good food," Visit Sacramento said. The Sacramento restaurants that received a Michelin Plates designation are:

  • Allora

  • Bacon & Butter

  • Binchoyaki

  • Ella

  • Grange

  • Localis

  • Mayahuel

  • Ming Dynasty

  • Mulvaney’s B&L

  • Zocalo

Michelin announced in March that secret inspectors would be sent to restaurants in Sacramento.

Last week, three Sacramento restaurants made it onto Michelin's Bib Gourmand list.

Bib Gourmand restaurants are those that the Michelin Guide sees as providing good food for good prices. Dozens of California restaurants representing a variety of cuisines make up the 2019 list.

In Sacramento, Canon, Frank Fat's and Mother were all honored.
